4th/5th Jan – ORB shows “11 aircraft attacked a Special Target in France which was in the Pas-de-Calais area dropping 127,500 lbs. of bombs. All bombed on T.I. Markers. There were three lots described as being 300 yards to 1 mile apart. No ground detail was identified”
6th Jan – ORB shows “The effort was Gardening and the area being North of Biarritz. All crews reported having successfully planted their vegetables without any outstanding feature taking place. 18,000 lbs. of seeds were sown during this operation. All aircraft were diverted to Predennack on return.”
14th Jan – ORB shows “The target was a specially selected one in the South of Cherbourg district. 94,000 lbs. of bombs were dropped. 9 aircraft attacked, visibility was bad and no ground details were seen. T.I. markers reported well placed. Should be a good trip.”
21st Jan – ORB shows “The target for ten aircraft was the Pas-de-Calais and for the remaining two South of Cherbourg. 12,500 lbs. of bombs were dropped during these two operations. Weather was clear over target, two T.I. Markers went down almost at zero hour and most aircraft report bursts to have been right through the markers. No opposition was met. Several aircrews report that it would be much easier to bomb accurately were there not so many aircraft over the target at the same time.”
25th/26th Jan – ORB shows “7 aircraft attacked the primary target which was South of Cherbourg dropping a total of 81,500 lbs. of bombs. Weather was 2/10 to 5/10ths. and low cloud over target. First T.I’s went down 3½ minutes before zero hour and all aircraft had to wait for the second lot of T.I’s. All aircraft bombed on these and bursts were seen close to the markers. Defences showed an increase, with searchlight defences reaching as far South as the Target. Slight heavy flak was not on the run in and from the target. Photographs were attempted.”
27th Jan – ORB shows “The effort was Gardening. Aircraft “Q” failed to take-off. Aircrafts “A”,”B”,”G”,”K”,”L”,”N”,”O”,”P”,”U” and “R” carried out a short gardening operation to Heligoland Bight and aircrafts “C”,”X”,”T” and “V” a long gardening operation to N.W. of Jutland. All crews reported having successfully planted their vegetables in their allotted areas and a total of 108,000 lbs. of seeds were sown during these two joint operations.”
28th Jan – ORB shows “The effort was Gardening and the target North of Kiel. 12 aircraft were detailed to attack primary target but owing to the weather conditions only 6 were able to do so. 4 attacked the alternative target and too jettisoned and returned early. Considerable icing was experienced east of 70E. The 4 aircraft which attacked the alternative target did not reach the primary target owing to severe icing conditions. A total of 54,000 lbs. of seeds were sown during this operation.”

12th Feb – ORB shows “The effort was Gardening in which 70,500 lbs. of vegetables were planted. The targets being Frisian Islands & off Cherbourg. All aircraft reported having successfully planted their vegetables in the allotted areas as ordered, with the exemption of “U” which brought back 1 vegetable owing to a hang up.”
15th Feb – ORB shows “The effort was Gardening and the target was Kiel Bay in which 58,500 lbs. of seeds were planted. Route Markers Nr. Mando Iseland were a great help. Red T.I. Markers were late. Weather was fair 10/10th. cloud and haze below but good visibility above. Aircraft “W” P/O T.Webster had two combats and claimed one enemy shot down just after the T.I. Markers, Other combats reported over Denmark.”
19th Feb – ORB shows “2 aircraft “E” P/O.Eliot and “H” P/O.Gillies were withdrawn. 8 aircraft attacked primary target which was a Gardening effort in Kiel Bay. Weather was 6/10-10/10ths.cloud with tops well below. Route Markers and final Markers were seen by all aircraft at each position a Marker of the opposite colour was dropped. Very little opposition from flak. A few fighters were seen as if waiting for Markers. Good trip. 32 vegetables were planted comprising 48,000 lbs. of seed.”
22nd Feb – ORB shows “The effort was Gardening and all crews were recalled owing to bad weather.”
24th Feb – ORB shows “The effort was mining in Kiel Bay. 9 aircraft planted 27 mines successfully in primary target. 1 aircraft “D” P/O.Coram returned early owing to compass failure. This was a good trip although there was increased opposition from flak on route. The pin point marker flares were on time. The position chosen for them seemed to be much to near the heavy flak battery at Mappeln. It is considered that route markers at the coast would have been a great help on the outward trip. One crew had a combat. Several fighters were seen and one aircraft thought to be seen shot down by light flak N.E. of Kiel. 10/ 10th. cloud in primary area, tops 8,000 ft. Good visibility above cloud. 49,500 lbs. of seeds were sown during this operation”

9th Apr – ORB shows “10. aircraft were detailed and 10 aircraft attacked primary target.
The target was the Lille Marshalling Yard. Thin layer of low stratus over the target. Only 2 aircraft saw the railway lines in the light of the large explosions which were reported by most crews on the run up to the Target. The target itself was observed by a pall of smoke up to 8,000 ft when aircraft left. T.I. Markers were on time and were bombed by all aircraft. 94,000 Ibs. of bombs were dropped during this operation.
12th Apr – ORB shows “This was a Gardening effort. 2 aircraft were off Egmond – Holland. 12 mines were laid in the Garden area. No opposition encountered. A quiet trip. 2 aircraft off S.W. end of Texel Island. 1 aircraft returned early and 1 aircraft brought mines back owing to failure of special equipment in both cases”
18th Apr – ORB shows “13 aircraft detailed and 12 attacked the primary target. This was a mining effort in Kiel Bay. 1 aircraft “F” (F/Lt. A. T. King} was attacked by a fighter just after crossing the Danish Coast on the way to the Target. The rear gunner Sgt Hancock was seriously wounded and a fire started in the aircraft. The mines were laid in the alternative area and the aircraft was brought safely back to base. There was a considerable increase in the fighter activity over Denmark, particularly in the S. E. JESBURG area. Fighter flares were numerous and 1 aircraft was seen to be shot down. Marker flares were well on time and the visibility was good. 58,500 lbs. of seeds were planted.
20th Apr – ORB shows “14 aircraft were detailed. 3 aircraft dropped 27×1000 lbs. on Primary Target which was Chambley Railway Depot N. of Paris. 9 aircraft had abortive sorties due to lack of reception on Special Navigation Equipment. 53×1000 lbs. were jettisoned and 28×1000 lbs. brought back. 1 aircraft landed at Enstone and 1 aircraft was reported missing. Visibility was good but no ground detail was seen. Very little opposition by flak and one enemy fighter seen just North of Paris. 88,000 lbs. of bombs were used on this operation.”
22nd Apr – ORB shows “14 aircraft detailed. The target was Laon Marshalling Yard. 9 aircraft attacked the primary target. 3 aircraft “J”, “P” and “N” returned early. 1 aircraft failed to take off (“B” F/Lt. I.F. Lock) and 1 aircraft “M” S/L. Poulter was missing. Weather was clear but some haze. Reception from M.C. was quite good but some interference was experienced. Flares illuminated aircraft and enemy aircraft were operating in the area when the attack started. All aircraft bombed on T.I‘s as directed by the M.C. Very little ground detail identified. One Bomb Aimer saw the Railway loop and thought that the Markers were in the right place and the attack fairly concentrated. 106,000 lbs. of bombs were dropped during this operation.”
23rd Apr – ORB shows “12 aircraft detailed, 11 attacked primary, 1 returned early Port Inner Engine u/s and jettisoned bombs in emergency just off the Air Field (“B” F/Lt. Lock.) Weather was clear over the target but hazy. Special Navigation Aids used for bombing in all cases and no failures were reported. Only bomb bursts were seen. Defences were very negligible. No fires were seen. The target was Vilvorde Depot. 88,000 lbs. of bombs were dropped during this operation.”
